“The Last Traffic Jam”
This concert DVD memorializes the work of what may be the absolute original “Jam Band.”
When members of Phish were looking forward to middle school, a teenaged Steve Winwood was riding the crest of an early success with the Spencer Davis Group (“Gimme Some Lovin’‘) and leaving he formed a partner ship with three older young men. The country jam sessions, They threw the pop music rule book out the window. After the first few recordings, aceguitarist Dave Moson went this own way, the other three contiued. Three included Chris Wood on various woodwinds, and multipercussionist from Jim Capaldi were the core. They were the basis for a living, breathing jam band..
He hit albums included “The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys ” and the neo-folk “John Barleycorn Must Die” provided music with an expansive quality
After initial run, the band re-signed to Iskand Records and began recording and tourin on it’s own schedule.
Wood died a decade ago of liver disease. What’s noteworthy about this reunion is that it happened at all. Winwood, noting the passage of time and reflecting the musical bonds of yesteryear, put the band back together and they went out.
As it turns out Capaldi died earlier this year (liver cancer) In video conversation included on the DVDm Winwood mkes it clear that the band is more than him alone. There will be no other Traffic reunions. |
